X Marks the spot. For the next mortise. I’ll need to do four of these, one on the end of each stretcher. The width is 3/8 inch leaving wall thickness of 5/16. For some reason, I don’t have a 3/8 chisel, so I’ll need to pick up one of those tomorrow morning. Fortunately, they’re fairly common and available from both Woodcraft and Rockler. Because the walls are so thin, they leave little room for error, so I’ll make up a guide as suggested by Paul Sellers as depicted below:
